Gov. Lingle To Hear Rail Plan Alternatives

From Governor Linda Lingle’s press conference on Friday, “It appears clear now that Gov. Linda Lingle is determined to put the brakes on Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s plans for a multi-billion rail transit system for Honolulu,” wrote Advertiser political columnist Jerry Burris.

The Advertiser also reported that Lingle said she will host a Jan. 18 forum on alternatives to the elevated rail line and will discuss the financial plans directly with federal transportation officials while in Washington next month from 9 to 11 a.m. in the state Capitol auditorium. The Jan.18th forum is separate from public hearings the state plans to hold once the city receives federal permission to release the rail project’s final environmental impact statement.

“This [forum] would be of little moment except that the governor must sign off on an environmental impact statement for the project,” added Burris. ” If she balks, it’s a major setback.”
