S.M.A.R.T. Students To Learn About Rail Benefits

At, the city announced that it will be hosting the S.M.A.R.T. (Save Money And Ride Transit) Youth Summit 2010, on February 12, 2010, 9am to 3pm at Leeward Community College. While no agenda is yet available, the financial benefits of the rail project are numerous and include such facts as:

  • Using rail mass transit is cheaper than owning and driving a car.
  • The Honolulu rail Project is expected to produce hundred of jobs within the first year of construction.
  • The sooner construction begins, the more the taxpayer will save in the long term.
  • Mass transit is a sustainable transportation solution that protects our priceless planet.

Yesterday, the State’s 2050 Sustainability Plan is again making its way to the Legislature. Lawmakers called for an independent review of the 2-year-old plan and the final report was unveiled at the State Capitol, reported HPR’S Wayne Yoshioka. Within the plan included interesting statistics from the state’s counties. Maui County’s Planning Director, Jeff Hunt said that alternative transportation use is on an upswing with ridership exceeding 2 million in 2009, up from 800,00 in 2007. These numbers suggest that not only is public transit a sustainable solution for our islands, but it is also in high demand.

Write your Governor and encourage her to support rail mass transit on Oahu and the 2050 Sustainability Plan for the state.
