Bill for Maui Rail Study Being Considered

Yesterday, the Honolulu Advertiser reported that, “A state House committee is considering two nonbinding measures that call for a study of a light-rail system on Maui.” One of these two bills is HCR101.

Today, the Maui News also covered the bills now in the House. Principal author of the bil, West Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey, told the Maui News, “The one thing that keeps coming up is that (Honolulu) should have done this when (former Mayor Frank) Fasi pitched the idea in the 1960s,”

“My thinking is, let’s get the conversation going on Maui now,” he added.

The train system would connect central Maui, Kihei and Lahaina. Currently, only Lahaina is served by a rail transit system, the famous Sugar Cane Train.
